Will Apple Watch Ultra 2 be evolutionary or revolutionary? Will it be unveiled during the Wonderlust event on September 21?

After long rumors, in 2022, Apple released the Pro model smart watch in the form of Apple Watch Ultra. This product offers various improvements such as better battery life, longer durability, brighter screen and a dedicated action button.

Will there be an Apple Watch Ultra 2?

Although Apple never provides exact sales figures for its devices, after reviewing the Apple Watch Ultra, it received good reviews from Zoomit and other websites. Apple these days also rarely launches a new category of its products without a serious commitment. Even though the first generation HomePod was not successful, this company has launched its new generation.

There are also rumors about the new Apple Watch Ultra, which we will discuss further. All these rumors may turn out to be wrong or Apple may change its mind; Therefore, the authenticity of these items cannot be officially confirmed.

Is Apple calling it the Apple Watch Ultra 2?

Apple Watch Ultra 2 is probably not the official name of the watch; Because Apple avoids simple naming schemes except for its iPhones. In general, most of the Apple watches were released under the name of “series”, which after the main model, they were called the second series. The only exceptions are the original, Ultra, and SE, and the 2022 SE update is only sometimes referred to as “second generation.”

Our prediction is that the next Ultra will follow in the footsteps of the SE or become the Ultra Series 2. In this article, we’ll just call it “Ultra 2” for convenience. Apple might bring some interesting and different features to the next-generation Ultra, especially since the Ultra’s competitors aren’t ordinary smartwatches; Rather, they are high-end fitness watches from the Garmin brand.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 introduction date

Previous Apple smartwatches were released in the following months:

Original version: April 2015
Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch Series 2: September 2016
Apple Watch Series 3: September 2017
Apple Watch Series 4: September 2018
Apple Watch Series 5: September 2019
Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE (first generation): September 2020
Apple Watch Series 7: October 2021
Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation): September 2022
By sending an invitation to the media and technology activists, Apple announced that it will hold a new conference on September 12, 2023 (21 Shahrivar 1402) at 20:30 Iran time. Undoubtedly, the iPhone 15 will be the star of Apple’s Wonderlust event, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will probably also be unveiled.

Some reports suggest that the Watch Ultra 2 may have been delayed due to the production costs of the new display technology that is expected to be used in the watch. Also, Apple can skip the launch of the second generation Apple Watch Ultra in 2023, like the Apple Watch SE and SE 2022, the first of which was introduced in 2020 and the second in 2022.

Designing

Apple will probably tweak the design of the Watch Ultra 2 instead of trying to overhaul it. Mark Gorman of Bloomberg has claimed that Apple is apparently now focusing on the Apple Vision Pro, and if true, this claim shows where Apple’s priorities lie. The Vision Pro was showcased at WWDC and is expected to arrive in early 2024.

Everything else is more speculation at this point. Mark Gorman also says that Apple is working on a MicroLED display for the Ultra series, which may replace the current OLED display and arrive by 2024. However, display analyst Ross Young later claimed that this is not the case and that the new display won’t arrive until the second half of 2025. Korean publication The Elec claims that this deadline has been pushed back to 2026 once again. This means that the mentioned technology will probably not be present in Ultra 2. In theory, this technology can provide better brightness, color and viewing angle.

If there is a change in the design, it might be related to the size of the screen, because according to a rumor published by Digitimes, the size of this screen may increase from 1.9 inches to 2.1 inches.

Users can now expect a larger display via WatchOS 10 with the user interface overhaul that the company announced at WWDC. Using the digital crown, you can see information about everything from the weather to timers, access to medical information and favorite apps. Apple also showed off two watch faces, one featuring the lovable characters Snoopy and Woodstock.

Meanwhile, the well-known leaker ShrimpApplePro claims that the Watch Ultra 2 will be available in a black titanium case in addition to the silver titanium case. Above is a rendering posted by ShrimpApplePro on X (formerly Twitter).

One possible upgrade is a faster processor. From the first generation model, Apple introduces new watch processors every year, and the Ultra series shows the company’s progress.

Health-oriented capabilities

According to recent reports, Apple’s fitness and health tracking hardware probably won’t change much this year; Except for the minor amendments that may come with it. The Ultra model currently has a heart rate sensor, ECG capability to record heart rate, compass, altimeter, blood oxygen and dual-band GPS.

For a long time, there have been rumors of Apple’s interest in adding blood sugar and pressure sensors to watches; But Gorman says that’s not expected until at least 2024. These technologies will also require approval from each country’s health authorities.

Thanks to WatchOS 10, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will have more sports features for cyclists. WatchOS 10 will also add more features to the Compass app, including typographic maps and useful markers to identify users’ last location.

Other improvements of WatchOS 10 include updating the Mindfulness app and refocusing on mental health. Finally, Apple announced that a future update will add the ability to use your watch’s ambient light sensor to measure time spent outdoors. This possibility is important to maintain eye health.

What will be the price of Apple Watch Ultra 2?

The price of Apple Watch Ultra 2 is in an aura of uncertainty. Apple is expected to stick with the original $799 price tag.

However, Apple has been under a lot of pressure from supply chain and inflation issues. This issue can lead to an increase in the price of Apple Watch.

Better battery life

Apple promises 36 hours of battery life on the first generation Ultra with normal use. This period can be extended up to 60 hours by using Low Power Mode, which reduces GPS and heart rate and turns off always-on display functions.

While this figure is much better than the 8 series; But again, next to some smartwatches that Apple competes with, it’s not that much. The Garmin Epix Gen 2 watch lasts up to 6 days in normal mode and up to 21 days in Battery Saver Watch mode. Fitbit Sense 2 also lasts up to 6 days despite the much cheaper price of $300.

Apple is not expected to improve the Watch Ultra 2’s battery much; Because this company uses more powerful processors than its competitors. Maybe one day Apple will even take the lead in adding the solar panels that the Garmin smartwatch is equipped with to expand its outdoor usability.

Fully customizable action button

The Ultra Action Button makes it more convenient than a regular Apple Watch in many situations; Because it is easier to do things like opening the workout application. However, for whatever reason, Apple currently limits customization to a limited range of options.

Pursuing the recovery of health and physical fitness

Platforms like Garmin put a lot of emphasis on tracking physical recovery. This feature will help you stay on track to achieve your health goals. We imagine that given the number of health researchers working for Apple, the company will likely add this feature at some point. However, there was no mention of this in the WatchOS 10 announcement.
